Life as a River Helper for Casting for Recovery

Posted by Tonda Lark at

This past Sunday I had the privilege of being a River Helper at the Casting for Recovery North Idaho/ Eastern Washington retreat down at the Flying B Ranch, outside of Kamiah, Id.

The women at the retreat have had or are currently battling cancer. They were so energetic about being outdoors fly fishing and having a fishing companion with them to tie knots, give casting tips and most importantly net their caught fish. It was a real treat for me to be part of this retreat and visit with such courageous women. Their enthusiasm was contagious. I especially enjoyed fishing with MJ who caught the groups first fish of the day and then continued to hook and land fish throughout the morning. The Flying B Ranch offered a beautiful setting and lunch was superb.

I am already looking forward to volunteering as a River Helper again next year, and the group is always looking for a few more men to do the same. Casting for Recovery is a really great group, and I encourage everyone to learn more about by checking out their website. It is a very humbling experience that I will never forget.
